Clarkson was automatically assessed the ban when he left the bench on Sunday night to participate in a brawl with the Buffalo Sabres. Because Clarksons suspension is more than five games, the appeal process could include an independent arbitrator. Any appeal would first be heard by NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, but if he were to uphold the suspension, Clarkson could bring the appeal to an arbitrator. Since the ban begins in the regular season, Clarkson will play on Tuesday night when the Leafs host the Ottawa Senators at the Air Canada Centre. He is also eligible to play in the Leafs remaining two preseason games this weekend against Detroit. Leafs coach Randy Carlyle said that Clarkson will travel with the team to Montreal and Philadelphia for the Leafs first two regular season games and will continue to practice with the club to stay “as game-ready as possible.” Clarksons teammate Phil Kessel will have a disciplinary hearing via telephone on Tuesday at 4:45 pm ET for his role in the brawl.
