SEATTLE (AP) — The Mariners‘ offensive woes have Antworten

been the chief culprit for their fall from AL playoff contention. Those struggles showed up again Tuesday night Craig Gentry Jersey , only furthering Seattle’s fade from the wild-card race.Wil Myers lined an RBI double off major league saves leader Edwin Diaz with one out in the ninth inning, lifting the San Diego Padres to a 2-1 win and dropping the Mariners 8 1/2 games back in the race for the second AL wild card. The Mariners only have 18 games left after losing to the Padres for the third time in the past month. It was the 11th time since July 1 the Mariners scored one run or fewer. Not surprisingly, they dropped to 1-10 in those games.“Story of tonight, just our lack of offensive production. We haven’t done much at all swinging the bats against San Diego this year,” Seattle manager Scott Servais. While Seattle’s hitters failed to come through with scoring chances, Myers got the better of the best closer in baseball this season. Myers lined an RBI double off Diaz to snap the 1-1 tie.Diaz (0-4) struggled without having a chance at his 55th save and left pitches up. He gave up singles to Hunter Renfroe and Eric Hosmer leading off the inning. After a strikeout of Franmil Reyes, Myers jumped on the first pitch and pulled it into the left field corner, letting pinch-runner Travis Jankowski score easily from second. It was just the second inning all night the Padres put multiple runners on base, but they were able to capitalize on their opportunity unlike the Mariners.“To be able to get something going off a guy like that is pretty tough,” Myers said. “I think it’s pretty cool that we can sit back and say we got to arguably the best closer in the game. You take some confidence in that.”Seattle was 1 for 6 with runners in scoring position and missed on chances to take the lead in both the seventh and eighth innings. Kirby Yates pitched the ninth inning for his eighth save.Seattle had runners at second and third and no outs in the seventh and failed to score Andrew Cashner Jersey , and loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth inning and failed to score again. Cameron Maybin, who doubled in the seventh, couldn’t come through in the eighth against Craig Stammen (8-2), flying out to the warning track in right to end the threat.“In those situations, you’ve got to get your pitch to hit, and we didn’t do anything with it,” Servais said.Robinson Cano’s solo home run in the third inning was Seattle’s only run.STARTING OFFMarco Gonzales pitched well in his first start off the disabled list for Seattle. Gonzales lost four straight decisions before going on the disabled list with a muscle strain in his neck on Aug. 27. In all four starts, he allowed at least four earned runs. In two of the starts he was knocked around for seven and eight earned runs.Gonzales was on a limited pitch count but made the most of his five innings, allowing just four hits and one run before departing after 66 pitches. He struck out two and limited any damage to Reyes’ RBI infield single in the fourth inning.“I just started to throw across my body a little more so mechanically made a little adjustment and cleaned up some things that showed tonight,” Gonzales said. “I thought I had some life on my pitches.”San Diego starter Bryan Mitchell was even better. Making his second start after missing four months due to an elbow injury Chance Sisco Jersey , Mitchell allowed four hits over six innings. His lone mistake was the changeup he left up in the zone that Cano hit out to center field. Mitchell retired 10 of the final 11 batters he faced.TRAINER’S ROOMPadres: Rookie 2B Luis Urias injured his left hamstring to beat out a grounder in the eighth inning. Urias pulled up just before he reached first base and had to be helped back to the San Diego dugout.CALL UPSPadres: San Diego added infielder Javy Guerra and pitchers Kazuhisa Makita, Colten Brewer and Brad Wieck to its active roster. Manager Andy Green said Guerra would get some time at shortstop in the closing weeks.Mariners: Seattle’s expanding roster added right-handers Matt Festa and Nick Rumbelow from Double-A Arkansas, along with reinstating Gonzales from the DL. Rumbelow and Festa both had brief stints with the Mariners earlier in the season. Seattle now has 38 players on its active roster.UP NEXTPadres: Lefty Joey Lucchesi (7-8) will make his 23rd start of his rookie season. Lucchesi allowed one run over 6 2/3 innings in a victory over Seattle last month.Mariners: Lefty Wade LeBlanc (8-3) will make his 23rd start and has not allowed an earned run in his last 18 innings pitched. LeBlanc has thrown at least six innings in his last three starts. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Billie Jean King has gone back to her roots in becoming part of the Los Angeles Dodgers‘ ownership group. The tennis champion first became enamored with the team when it arrived from Brooklyn in 1958. King says she and younger brother Randy Moffitt “grew up bleeding Dodger blue” in Long Beach. Moffitt later pitched in the majors for teams that included the rival San Francisco Giants, or as King puts it “the wrong team.”King and her partner Ilana Kloss have taken an undisclosed stake in the Dodgers at the invitation of owner Mark Walter.“It’s a great thing for the Dodgers,” manager Dave Roberts said.Pending approval by the WNBA, King and Kloss are also expected to have an ownership interest along with Walter in the Los Angeles Sparks.“We’re not allowed to talk about it,” King said, referring to her percentage of the Dodgers. “We’re all in this together.”King said she hopes they “can make a difference that’s meaningful and be impactful.”She and Kloss met Walter and his wife Kimbra in the last year while helping raise money for a new tennis complex on the South Side of Chicago, where King splits her time when she’s not in New York.“We took a beat and waited and then said we’ve got to do this,” said Kloss http://www.oriolesfanproshop.com/authentic-j.j.-hardy-jersey , who is King’s former doubles partner. “It’s funny how little deals sometimes take forever and deals that are the most meaningful are about the people and the relationships.”Walter, King and Kloss didn’t get into specifics about what their roles with the team will be.“We need a lot of listening first because this has happened very fast,” King said. “We need to learn from everybody.”Walter said King and Kloss “know a ton” about professional sports and leagues, with King having co-founded World TeamTennis, which just wrapped up its 43rd season.“They’re so underselling what they add in terms of value,” Walter said. One area that King and Kloss hope to expand upon is the Dodgers’ efforts to be inclusive to the LGBTQ community.“I care so much about everyone,” King said. “I want everyone to feel included.”Kloss added, “We really are excited not only about doing well but doing good.”King, the 74-year-old former No. 1 player in the world, was like a kid at batting practice Thursday. Sporting a No. 17 jersey Caleb Joseph Jersey , she and Kloss stood behind the cage watching the Dodgers take cuts while chatting with coaches.King said it is her and her brother’s favorite number since both favor odd numbers.King caught up with outfielder Chase Utley, whom she’s known since his days with the Philadelphia Phillies. She pointed out that they attended the same junior high and high school, albeit at different times, in Long Beach.King and Kloss are the first women among the current Dodgers ownership, which includes NBA legend Magic Johnson and entertainment executive Peter Guber.“It’s great as women that we’re a part of this,” King said. “It sends a very strong message.”
