OAKLAND, Calif. -- Now that hes a key part of the Athletics starting rotation, Drew Pomeranz has tried to maintain the same aggressive approach on the mound that he had coming out of the bullpen. Its turned out better than anyone could have hoped for so far. Making his second start of the season after replacing Dan Straily as Oaklands fourth starter, Pomeranz and three relievers combined on a four-hit shut out as the As beat the Chicago White Sox 9-0 on Tuesday night for their sixth consecutive win. "Thats that mentality, Im kind of just trying to go right after people," Pomeranz said. "Thats what I was doing out of the bullpen and I had success doing that. I dont see any reason to change that." Pomeranz (3-1) went five shutout innings in his first start on May 7 and matched that with another stellar five-inning outing against Chicago. The Athletics left-hander struck out a career-high eight, walked two and gave up just three hits -- all singles. "Thats a tough lineup to navigate through," As manager Bob Melvin said. "He strikes out the first three hitters of the game, sets the tone, and then the offence was terrific across the board." Brandon Moss homered twice and drove in five runs, Josh Reddick also homered while Yoenis Cespedes added two hits and scored twice to anchor a shuffled Oakland lineup that had catcher John Jaso batting leadoff for just the fourth time this season. Jaso had three hits and scored twice. The White Sox lost their fourth straight. "Guys swung through some pitches and (Pomeranz) pounded the strike zone," Chicago manager Robin Venture said. "We got outplayed all the way around. Nothing went right." Oakland improved to 25-15, matching its best record after 40 games since 2003. The As won their second straight over the White Sox in much the same fashion theyve put together the second-best record in the AL -- strong starting pitching and plenty of offence. Pomeranz, who replaced Dan Straily in the As rotation after Straily was optioned to the minors, blanked the White Sox through five innings and allowed only two runners to reach second base. He struck out the side twice and fanned leadoff hitter Marcus Semien three times. Dan Otero pitched two innings, Fernando Abad worked the eighth and Joe Savery handled the ninth to complete the four-hitter. That continued a stellar streak by Oakland starting pitchers. Over a six-game stretch that began when Pomeranz helped blank the Seattle Mariners, As starters are 5-0 with a 1.13 ERA. "I think we feed off of each other," Pomeranz said. "You want to keep it going. You dont want to be the guy that doesnt pitch well." The offence has been just as sharp. The As matched their season-high with 17 hits and had at least three home runs for the fourth time this season. Reddick hit a two-run home run as part of the As four-run fifth while Moss had a two-run shot in the sixth and another two-run homer in the eighth. Eight of Oaklands nine starters had at least one hit. Reddick, Moss, Cespedes, Jed Lowrie and Craig Gentry had two apiece. The As jumped on Chicago starter Scott Carroll (1-3) early then held on behind Pomeranz and the bullpen. "(Carroll) was mixing his pitches but when youre throwing a lot of strikes (hitters) can be aggressive with pitches in the zone," Moss said. "Thats what our guys were doing. Those kind of nights are fun four everybody." NOTES: 3B Josh Donaldson was given the day off by Oakland manager Bob Melvin. ... Colorado came up big against Chicago last spring, and repeated that performance Tuesday night. Varlamov stopped 36 shots and Paul Stastny had a goal and an assist for the Avalanche in a 5-1 victory over the Blackhawks. Tyquan Lewis Colts Jersey . On the day after Billy Horschel posted his 12th straight round in the 60s, won his second straight tournament against a world-class field and picked up an additional $10 million bonus as the FedEx Cup champion, Watson was kicking back in his seat at a Kansas City Royals game. Matt Slauson Jersey . After losing Brett Cecil to groin tightness on Friday, the Blue Jays watched as R.Will Greenwood said England and Wales both benefited from a tough game ahead of their respective summer tours. England outscored their opponents five tries to one as they ran out 27-13 winners at Twickenham on Sunday.Eddie Jones side were in full flight ahead of their venture to Australia to take on the Wallabies, but the Sky Sports pundit believes both camps will take a lot from the encounter. I think both sides will be chuffed with that, said Greenwood. I thought it was a cracking Test match.Mike Phillips sent out an interesting Tweet before the game saying how happy he was that there was finally a proper Test match before heading to the southern hemisphere. Englands head coach Eddie Jones felt his side showed that they could be tactically flexible If you keep getting battered by southern hemisphere sides you need a proper warm-up game and today those teams got that.Bodies were put through the mill, players like Dylan Hartley, Alun Wyn-Jones and Scott Williams got a proper game of rugby under their belt.A few deficiencies were there from both sides and hopefully that will have helped iron them out because these teams have the ultimate challenge, theyre playing the World Cup finalists. While Wales will be disappointed with the loss, both coaches will take an enormous amount out of todays game to help them hopefully achieve success in the southern hemisphere. It was a great confidence builder, Eddie Jones is now six from six and has beaten Warren Gatland twice. England are in really good shape but there is a big challenge coming in Australia. Dylan Hartley and Joe Launchbury were both concerned with Englands slow start to their match against Wales England took victory despite missing some frontline players.dddddddddddd None of the Exeter or Saracens players who took part in the Aviva Premiership final on Saturday were able to play for Eddie Jones team, which means they can still improve.Theres no doubt that the Grand Slam was heavily reliant in key moments of that Six Nations on five or six Saracens players, and Jack Nowell can score wonder-tries so throw him into the mix too. Teimana Harrison was excellent and Jack Clifford will get a lot of headlines. Im also loving what Anthony Watson is doing with his finishing at the moment. Will Greenwood However the World Cup winner says those players have their work cut out for them in getting back into the team after some good performances at Twickenham.Joe Launchbury was brilliant, he took the first lineout, took the first restart and made the first tackle. He was everywhere - a man mountain. Warren Gatland was reasonably happy with aspects of Wales 27-13 defeat to England I thought the second row depth in general for England was outstanding in fact - Launchbury and Courtney Lawes both played well. The challenge has been set by two incredible players in George Kruis and Maro Itoje, but Launchbury is hot on their heels.Teimana Harrison was excellent and Jack Clifford will get a lot of headlines. Im also loving what Anthony Watson is doing with his finishing at the moment.England now head to Australia to take on the Wallabies in a three-match tour, and Greenwood hopes that Jones side can build on Sundays win and compete in a tough series against last years losing World Cup finalists. As a fan I would like the series to be alive in the third Test.If England win one of the first two Tests and head to Sydney with the series still in the balance then theyre not quite back, but theyre starting to get their cutlery out to sit at the top table of rugby.
