BOSTON -- Carey Price offered the tiniest hint of a smile after sending the Boston Bruins home for the summer. "Im ecstatic," said the Canadiens goalie in the wake of backstopping Montreal to the Eastern Conference final against the New York Rangers. Considering it normally takes the Hubble Telescope to spot a change in Prices emotions, Wednesday was a night to remember. The Canadiens, who finished eight places and 17 points back of the league-leading Boston during the regular season, made it so by dispatching the big bad Bruins 3-1 in Game 7. Price, as he has been through the series, was all-world -- even reportedly addressing his teammates prior to the third period. Dale Weise, Max Pacioretty and Daniel Briere provided the offence as Montreal rose to the occasion of Game 7 better than the Bruins. Now the Habs must reload and refocus on the Rangers, a team coming off an emotional series win over Pittsburgh. "Its not over. Were only halfway there," cautioned Price. For the Canadiens, the win over Boston was all about respect. They were tired of being written off as also-ran Smurfs and fed up with what they saw as Bostons macho posturing. "Beating those guys, it just feels that much sweeter," said Weise, who as a former Vancouver Canuck has no love for Boston. "They just disrespected us in every single way and I didnt think they had any respect for us as a team," he added. "Well leave it at that." Said defenceman P.K. Subban: "A lot of people were saying Dont poke the bear. Well I thought they gave us many reasons to keep competing throughout the whole series ... Against a bigger, stronger, more experienced team, we pulled out a victory. Thats a character win for us. Thats a character series win for us." The chip on Montreals shoulder was the size of Mount Rushmore. Weise did not spare the media, turning his attention to TSNs hockey panel as one of its members stood on his right shoulder. "We were very comfortable playing that team," Weise said of Boston. "I think everyone else doubted us. I heard someone on the TSN panel actually say they were the perfect hockey club. I dont know what that says about us now." Said Subban: "It come down to respect. Weve done a lot of great things in this league since Ive been here, our teams done a lot but we failed to get the respect that I think we deserved. And I think we earned that." While there were the traditional handshakes after the game, there was also bad blood. "Milan Lucic had a few things to say to a couple of guys," said Weise, who declined to go into specifics. Lucic was unrepentant: "Its said on the ice so itll stay on the ice. If he (Weise) wants to be a baby about it -- he can make it public." Montreal coach Michel Therrien was cagey when asked about the disrespect issue. "Im not going to talk about the other team," said Therrien. "I never talk about the other team. One thing I could tell you we were a group that was really really motivated to win this series." He made the comment in both French and English just so the message got across. He too clearly felt his club won more than a playoff round. "Respect, youve got to earn it and I think tonight those guys earned it," said Therrien. Boston coach Claude Julien had his own take on the series, which came complete with chest-pounding, muscle-flexing and crest-pointing. "I dont think we disrespected them," he said. "Theres a rivalry here. We dont like each other, because its a rivalry. "At the same time, the pounding of the chest, people who have been here have seen us do that all year. Because its related to Boston Strong. Our guys take some pride in whats happened in Boston Strong and unfortunately everything we did seemed to be seen as disrespect in Montreal. "We heard a lot of that whining throughout the series but it had nothing to do with disrespect." Julien called it gamesmanship, the kind seen in every playoff round. "Its too bad that it gets blown out of proportion. But you know what, they won the series fair and square. They were the better team tonight and you have to respect that." The Canadiens showed character in the series, staving off elimination with a masterful performance in Game 6 in Montreal. They also showed lots of savvy. Montreal targeted Bruins captain Zdeno Chara, making the 37-year-old look slow and laboured. They also pressured Bostons young defenders, denying them avenues to advance the puck out of their end. The series was like rolling a boulder uphill for the Bruins, who rarely got their game going. Boston was touted as the team with all the depth but it was Montreal that got production from different quarters while the Bruins sputtered. Julien had said Game 7s deserved your best. The Bruins failed to deliver for much of the night despite outshooting Montreal 30-18. "Carey Price was outstanding," said Julien. "He gave them a chance to win every night." The Canadiens started fast and then stymied the Bruins, winners of the Presidents Trophy for the best regular-season record, to move deeper in the playoffs. Jarome Iginlas goal, which cut the Canadiens lead to 2-1 with 2:08 remaining in the second, set the scene for a dramatic third period. Iginla, pouncing on a rare Price rebound, hit the post early on. Boston pressed but the Canadiens held fast and Price, improving his record in elimination games in 2014 to 5-0 including the Olympics, was rock-solid with a disciplined team defending in front of him. The late Boston surge was not helped by a Johnny Boychuk penalty for interference with 4:31 remaining. "I cant stand here and say its not disappointing. In my mind, we were going to move forward. We were going to win this game and thats what I prepared myself for." The series has been a roller-coaster ride with no shortage of subplots, most of which involved Subban whose star continues to grow. When he wasnt firing bullets from the blue-line or skating circles, the flamboyant Canadiens defenceman was dodging water aimed his way from the Boston bench and dealing with racism on social media. Subban embraced the attention and found himself in the spotlight again ahead of Game 7 when he pointed to the crowd, noise and energy in Bostons TD Garden before saying: "I cant wait to take that all away from them." Subban focused on the task at hand Wednesday, forgoing the flash. In a series where the team scoring the first goal had won all six previous outings, a fast start was mandatory. Especially when teams scoring first in Game 7s were 112-40 (.737). Boston dug itself out of that hole and looked to fight back. But it was the Canadiens who scored at 10:22 after Boston failed to clear its zone. A diving Brandon Gallagher somehow found five-foot-seven David Desharnais, who emerged with the puck after Loui Eriksson, Soderberg and Bergeron failed to deal with it. Desharnais headed towards goal but rather than shooting, sent a no-look pass to Pacioretty to his right. "I want to thank the DA for being fair to me in this whole situation," Felton said outside court, also thanking his family, friends and fans "for supporting me and understanding who, the person, I am." His lawyer, Jim Walden, said the plea would allow Felton to "continue his career without interruption." The DAs office had no immediate comment on the agreement. Felton was arrested in February, turning himself in shortly after a Dallas Mavericks-Knicks game at Madison Square Garden. Authorities said his estranged wifes lawyer had brought a loaded semi-automatic handgun to a police precinct, saying it was Feltons and she wanted it out of their house. His wife, law student Ariane Raymondo-Felton, had filed for divorce the week before. Her lawyer didnt immediately respond to an inquiry about Feltons planned plea. Felton was charged with offences including a weapon-possession offence that carries the potential for up to seven years in prison; it outlaws large-capacity ammunition magazines, under some circumstances. TSN Hockey Insiders Bob McKenzie, Pierre LeBrun and Darren Dreger gathered for the latest installment of Insider Trading and the topics discussed included the injury situation for Team Canada, last second changes to their Olympic roster projections, and headline-making bubble players. A lot of concern over potential Team Canada goalie Roberto Luongo after he was run over by Dustin Brown, will he be okay? Darren Dreger: It sounds like good news for Team Canada. The MRI on Luongos ankle didnt detect anything severe; nothing overly concerning. Were told Luongo is walking without a limp and hes feeling better so that should mean Canada is okay to name Carey Price, Roberto Luongo, and Mike Smith as their three goaltenders. As soon as word broke there might be some concern with the long-term health of Luongo, that spawned obvious speculation as to what Steve Yzerman might do if they had to replace him from the mix and the sense that I have is it would have been Marc-Andre Fleury of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Bob McKenzie: Whether were talking Luongo or Steven Stamkos, the potential of having to replace an injured player is a very real one. We should look at what that process is. January 7 is the final day that all the federations and teams and countries have to name their final 25-man roster, but its not really final. In the case of Canada for example, they just nominate those 25 names and at the end of the month, between the 25th and 27th, the Canadian Olumpic Committee then vet that list to make sure there are no suspended players, to make sure everybody has a Canadian passport – that theyre not trying to sneak a Russian on there. Then 24 hours before the hockey competition begins on February 11th, there is a directorate meeting. Thats when the rosters become official, except theyre not quite official. In that space between the directorate meeting and two hours before the puck drops on February 12th – if somebody got injured on a game day skate – you technically have a very tiny window to go through and name somebody else but there are a lot of logistical issues with the Olympics being in Sochi. James Duthie: We have a change in our projected roster from Sunday. Price, Luongo, and Smith remain in goal. The defencemen remain the same except Dan Hamhuis comes on – remember head coach Mike Babcock has said from the beginning that hed prefer to have four left defencemen and four right defencemen – that desire pushes Hamhuis on and Dan Boyle off, who we had on Sunday. The forwards remain the same as well. Insider Trading: Canadas Olympic Team Projection Again, these are not all locks. Conversations are still going on with Team Canada brass involving forwards such as Eric Staal, Chris Kunitz, Milan Lucic, Patrick Marleau, Jeff Carter, and James Neal, and defencemen Mark Giordano, Marc Staal, Boyle, and Brent Seabrook; players that are still on the bubble. Mike Babcock has stressed speed for these Olympics. Is there any concern about speed with any of the players projected to make the roster? Pierre LeBrun: Its one to say it and for Team Canada it now has to be put into action. Canada looked like fish out of water in Torino and theyre trying to not repeat that in Sochi. The world juniors really brought that home for Team Canada – they have to have speed as a tiebreaker; guys who can skate on a larger, international ice. We know some of the locks – Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry, and Patrice Bergeron – arent great standards and by this standard are kind of slow so they dont want to add more guys that are average skaters on the roster. When you talk about bubble guys like Matt Duchene or Claude Giroux, those guys are in because they can skate on the bigger ice. There are a handful of players who will make major headlines whether they are on Team Canada or left off it; fascinating additions or glaring omissions. Lets run down the five most intriguing characters. McKenzie: Top of the list by a large margin over everybody else is PK Subban. With all due respect to our American friends, the Bobby Ryan and Keith Yandle controversy: a garden party to what it would be if the eight defencemen for Canada are announced and Subban, the reigning Norris Trophy winner – is left off. Over the course of this season, has there been any one moment where any network when theyre talking about what they believe Hockey Canada will do, have they had Subban in the Top Six? The answer is no. Weve never really gotten that strong sense that hes right in the mix, theres always been somebody ahead of him on the right side. Were projecting hes going to be here in the Top Eight but if any of us were to sit here and say hes an absolute, 100 percent lock, I dont think we could. Another intriguing name is Martin St. Louis given that Yzerman is his GM in Tampa Bay. LeBrun: That would be one tough phone call from Yzerman to St. Louis and you remember when Yzerman was made GM in Tampa after Vancouver 2010, that was kind of an awkward meeting between the two. St. Louis has actually strengthened his case by his play without Stamkos this season. Hes continued to be a productive player. On the big ice in Sochi, St. Louis has a spot on this team and I think in many ways, if the stars align, Yzerman owes this to St. Louis. But he has to have earned it and I think he has. Maybe the most debated player over the past couple months is Kunitz. Dreger: And hell continue to fight for a spot. His numbers speak for themselves: hes second, or at least tied for second among the Canadian goal scorers with his linemate and captain Sidney Crosby. As good as his stats are, hes still being viewed as a longshot. On numbers alone hes made a strong case, the chemistry with Crosby is obvious, but I dont think its going to be enough. And another perhaps surprise would be Marleau of the San Jose Sharks. Yes, he has the experience the coaches love, he has the speed thats going to be good on the big ice but I dont think its going to be enough. How about another Patrick in Patrick Sharp? LeBrun: I would argue that no other Canadian forward over the last year has made his case stronger than Sharp. His play in the playoffs for the reigning Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks was amazing; he should have been among the three or four names among the Conn Smythe Trophy voting. His play this season in the first three months has been absolutely magical on both sides of the puck. Hes versatile – he can play all three forward positions – which is important in a tournament where you have to juggle lines because of injuries. There has to be a place on this team for Sharp. I know you cant take everyone, but this guy just fits in so well. Did James Neal get forgotten in this selection process? Dreger: He has been. Weve virtually not talked at all about Neal yet he is first in goals per game next to Stamkos. His numbers offensively are very impressive; there are some concerns with his game away from the puck, but hell be part of the conversation before the final decision on Tuesday. The same applies to Milan Lucic of the Boston Bruins; a fierce competitor, but is that going to be enough to sway them? Calvin De Haan Jersey .
