Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn. Jerami Grant Jersey .ca! Hi Kerry, A question on official stat-keeping from a daily reader. In Monday nights Devils/Habs game, P.K. Subban saved his Carey Prices bacon with a couple of goal line saves. Both were shots on goal, but werent saved by Carey Price. How is that type of situation recorded by the official scorer? Love the column,Dean Graddon Hi Dean: Thanks for being a loyal reader of Cmon Ref! Prior to the NHLs implementation of Real-Time Scoring in the 1998-99 season, both a shot on goal and a save credited to the goalkeeper would have been recorded in the official stats even though a defenceman might have made the stop. The reason for this was that pre-1998, "shot-blocks," "missed shots" and a host of other statistics was not counted. There were times when I saw a shot going wide of the net but the goalie caught the puck and he was credited with a save. Some goalies paid very close attention to "shots on goal" that was visible on the time clock. Some goalies even asked me to make sure they got credit for a save when it wasnt recorded on the score clock no differently than a skater asking for an assist on a goal. In Monday nights Devils/Habs game P.K. Subban would have been credited with a "shot-block". No "shot on goal" or "save" (to Carey Price) would be listed in the official stats. I provide you with the definition of a shot: Shot: A shot on goal occurs when an attempt by an attacking player, with intent to score a goal, either results in a goal or would have entered the goal if not stopped by the goaltender. There is also a stat for "missed shots" which would involve any shot that is off the net; wide or above the crossbar even if the goalkeeper was to catch or stop the puck. Judgment must be implemented by the Real Time Scorers to determine how and where to record each stat. Each off-ice crew is provided with a Situation Manual to guide them through various situations and to maintain consistent statistical recording from one NHL game to the next. Rule 37 presently outlines the duty of the Real Time Scorers to electronically record all official statistics for the game played. The five person crew located in the press box can utilize video review to confirm their record keeping decisions and are specifically assigned as follows: - Two (2) Stats Entry Scorers - Two (2) Time on Ice Scorers - Home and Visitors - Event Analyst Assigned by the League to oversee the Real Time Scorers, and the data collected is a Scoring System Manager (SSM), an off-ice official who is required to work one of the five (5) positions noted above in each game played. "Spotters" are also utilized to assist this five person crew (especially recording individual players time on ice) since the game is played at such a fast pace in Real Time. Real Time Stats are kept so in many different categories during a game they can provide instant feedback to coaches and fans alike as a tool to help analyze player performance and make adjustments. I talked with an NHL coach the other day who said his team got beat 3-1 in a game where they outshot their opponents by the wide margin of approximately 42 to 28. The GM was irate his team lost the game while the coach was pleased with his players energy level and effort. Perhaps not thinking about job security the coach response to the GM was, "We just need more players that can score." Ouch! The stats told the Real Time story in this case. Oklahoma City Thunder Jerseys .com) - The New York Islanders will try to solve their issues against Central Division opponents when they visit the Minnesota Wild for Tuesdays battle at Xcel Energy Center. Enes Kanter Jersey .Y. -- When the New York Islanders lead was cut in half in the opening minute of the third period, the sense of impending doom began wafting through Nassau Coliseum. http://www.authenticthunderauthority.com/shawn-kemp-thunder-jersey-c-10/ . LOUIS - The St.NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Chicago Blackhawks certainly draw plenty of their own fans with them when playing in Nashville. Simply playing the defending Stanley Cup champs definitely brings out the best in the Predators this season. Patric Hornqvist scored the go-ahead goal with 58.2 seconds left and Shea Weber added an empty-netter as the Nashville Predators rallied with five goals in the third period to beat the Blackhawks 7-5 Saturday night in their home finale. The teams combined to score seven goals in a wild and furious final period. Chicago was up 3-2 going into the third, and Nashville finally put the Blackhawks away with the two goals inside the final minute. Nashville, which also scored seven goals while beating Chicago earlier this season, took the season series 4-1 before an arena about half full of Blackhawks fans. "I felt that gave us some motivation to let them come and then go home sad," Nashville coach Barry Trotz said of the latest win. "That was my goal." Hornqvist also had an assist. Craig Smith had a goal and an assist. Paul Gaustad, Ryan Ellis, Matt Cullen and Colin Wilson also scored a goal apiece as 12 of 18 Nashville skaters got at least a point. Ben Smith, Marian Hossa, Matt Carey, Jeremy Morin and Andrew Shaw each scored a goal for Chicago, which finished the season third in the Central Division. The Blackhawks now must wait to see if they are playing either Colorado or St. Louis when the playoffs start. Both teams play Sunday. "Its going to be interesting," Hossa said. "Itll come down to the last game to decide who were going to play." The Predators were eliminated from the post-season for a second straight year with a shootout loss Tuesday night at Dallas, but they now are 8-1-2 over their last 11 games. They certainly didnt quit when they had the chance down 2-0 in the first period or trailing going into the third. "Its obviously a good sign," Weber said. "Theres no quit in this locker room. A lot of character. We knew guys werent going to quit. Its tough to be out of the post-season, but there is still a lot to play for." Nasshville scored the first two goals of the third as Cullen scored off a rebound at 4:03 followed by Wilson scoring off a rebound of Webers shot at 7:05. Patrick Patterson Jersey. . That gave Nashville its first lead of the night at 4-3. It didnt last long as Morin scored 55 seconds later with a helping hand from Nashville defenceman Roman Josi who was trying to poke it away from the post only to knock it over the line tying it up at 4. Gaustad put Nashville up 5-4 with 2:55 left only to see Shaw tie it up yet again with a slap shot with 1:35 remaining. Hornqvist put Nashville ahead to stay when he tipped in a shot by Wilson. With goalie Antti Raanta pulled, Weber sealed the win with his 22nd goal this season. "Obviously, there are four months until the next home game, but I think it was great for our fans to see what we are all about," Hornqvist said. "When we are playing good, we can beat any team in the league and obviously it will give us some confidence for next year too." The Blackhawks faithful did their best to turn this game into a near home game with so much red sitting in the stands, taking advantage of the short flight from Chicago. They turned out even though Chicago was already locked into third in the Central Division, and coach Joel Quenneville scratched defenceman Duncan Keith for a second straight game. Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews remained out with injuries waiting for the playoffs. Hossa did not play after the first period after getting his 30th goal this season, which Quenneville discussed with him Saturday morning. "It was a perfect ending for him," Quenneville said. "He had a nice year for us." NOTES: Nashville finished the season with four straight home wins. ... Hornqvist now has a career-high 52 points this season, and the Swede has 17 points in his last 10 games. Thats the most of any NHL player since March 21. ... Careys goal was the first of his career in his second NHL game. ... Cullens goal was his 600th career NHL point. ... The Blackhawks finish the season 12-3-3 in the second game of back-to-back series. ... Chicago scored five or more goals in an NHL-best 25 games.
